SADC peer review mission
SADC Macroeconomic Convergence Peer Review Mission
A Team of officials from the Republic of Angola accompanied by officials from the SADC Secretariat was in Botswana from 12th - 16th February 2024 to undertake a SADC Peer Review exercise. The general objectives of the Mission were to review Botswana’s macroeconomic developments since the last Peer Review that was undertaken in February 2018, to assess the country’s progress towards attainment of the SADC Macroeconomic Convergence Criteria.
Annex 2 of the SADC Protocol on Finance and Investment established a Macroeconomic Convergence (MEC) Programme for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member States. The MEC Programme is aimed at encouraging Member States to reach some level of policy convergence to make the region attractive for investment; both domestically and externally.
The SADC Peer Review Panel (PRP) meeting which was held on 19th July 2023 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), approved peer reviews of four Member States in the 2023/2024 review round and the Republic of Botswana is one of the four selected Member States that was scheduled to be peer reviewed by the Republic of Angola.
The review saw various ministries and parastatals reporting on their mandates and various achievements. The Peer review comes at a time when most SADC member states are recovering from the COVID-19 effects and are aiming to improve their economies.
On the last day of the mission, 16th February 2024, the team paid a courtesy call to the Honourable Minister and presented a synopsis of their preliminary their findings regarding their review Mission on Botswana.
