Sylvia Blyden on Umar u Fofana

Umaru Fofana says my country is "sick" because citizens caught him trying to transfer credit from APC-led government of Former President Koroma to SLPP-led regime of H.E. President Bio in the matter of annual global reports on fiscal transparency. But who is more sick? Umaru Fofana or Sierra Leone? Let us examine things. A sick person is someone who goes over the BBC to help his PAOPA/SLPP political handlers to LIE that a former president pocketed over 100 million dollars from sales of Sierra Rutile mining company shares. Utter sickness! A sick person is one who lacks the in-bred decency to retract and apologise to the former president. Nauseating sickness! A sick person will instead want to now push through more insidious propaganda that the former president's very enviable credentials on instituting fiscal transparency (as consistently praised by the U.S. State Department for several continuous years under the former president) is some kind of brand new development u

Crystal Palace 3-1 Brentford: Olise stars in comeback win

Crystal Palace 3-1 Brentford: Olise stars in comeback win Rachel Stein Michael Olise inspired Crystal Palace to victory (Adam Davy/PA) Michael Olise scored in each half as Crystal Palace ended their eight-game winless streak with a 3-1 comeback victory over Brentford at a soggy Selhurst Park. Under pressure, Roy Hodgson’s hosts bounced back from a sorry start to an afternoon that began with Keane Lewis-Potter’s opener for the Bees inside two minutes. Olise ensured it was all square before the 15-minute mark and Eberechi Eze added another before the break – the first time Palace have scored more than one before half-time this season. Neal Maupay came closest to clawing one back for the visitors, rattling the crossbar as the Bees staged a late surge, but Brentford could not stop themselves from slipping to a club-record fifth straight Premier League defeat. In his programme notes, Hodgson expressed his “disappointment and frustration” at the fact he has “never had the opportunity” to wo

Manchester City 2:0 Sheffield United: Alvarez and Rodri on target

Man City 2-0 Sheffield United: Alvarez and Rodri on target Andy Hampson Press Association 30/12/2023 17:00 Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez celebrates scoring the second (Martin Rickett/PA) Rodri and Julian Alvarez struck as Manchester City closed out a remarkable year with a routine 2-0 win over Premier League bottom side Sheffield United. Champions League final match-winner Rodri put City on course for a comfortable win at the Etihad Stadium with a fine strike after 14 minutes and Alvarez finished the job in the second half. After a tricky spell earlier in December, City have now ended 2023 – a year which brought five trophies including English, European and world titles – looking more like their old dominant selves. It was the first time they had secured back-to-back Premier League wins since the first week of November and ended a run of eight games without a clean sheet. The game also saw Kevin De Bruyne back in a matchday squad for the first time since August. Jack Grealish reta

Wolves 3:0 Everton: Host pile pressure on the Toffees

Wolves 3-0 Everton: Hosts pile pressure on Toffees Wolves celebrated with Mario Lemina’s shirt following the death of his father (Barrington Coombs/PA) Max Kilman’s first goal in two years inspired Wolves to a dominant win over struggling Everton. The defender’s opener, Matheus Cunha’s tap in and Craig Dawson’s strike wrapped up an impressive 3-0 win at Molineux. The squad celebrated with team-mate Mario Lemina’s shirt with the midfielder missing the game following the death of his father. For the Toffees, their Christmas decline continued, four straight wins earlier in December have now been followed by three successive Premier League defeats and a Carabao Cup exit. They remain a point above the relegation zone after an insipid and powderpuff performance. Wolves – with nine goals in their last three games – are now unbeaten in eight at home and earned a third straight Premier League win for the first time in almost two years to remain 11th in an increasingly impressive season.   the game before Barkley launched a counterattack. The former England and Chelsea midfielder's energy drove the team forward and he went close when he curled over a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area. Rob Edwards' side will be disappointed to have missed out on what could have been when Adebayo hit the crossbar from close range and substitute Morris' header was pushed on to the bar by Djordje Petrovic as they looked to secure an unlikely point. Luton are still in the relegation zone but this was another performance that will give them hope they can stay in the Premier League, having pushed another of the league's traditional elite right until the end. ■ Follow the reaction to Chelsea's win over Luton plus the rest of today's Premier League matches here ■ Everything Luton in one place ■ Keep up to date with all things Chelsea

Two communities get water tanks

Thanks to Catholic Relief Services for the donation of 4 water tanks to Freetown City Council for the benefit of residents living in the Cocklebay and Kolleh Town communities. We have together been working on the “Transforming Lives” informal settlement upgrade intervention in these two communities. We have already had extensive community engagement, conducted geotechnical studies of the land in the communities and co-designed appropriate housing models with residents.  The next phase of “Transforming Lives” is working with community residents on developing Area Action Plans (localized plans) which if implemented will significantly improve access to services and living conditions in these communities. In the meantime, these 4 water tanks (two for each community) will alleviate some of the water access challenges currently faced by Cocklebay and Kolleh Town communities, particularly benefiting women and girls.  The Deputy Mayor Kweku Lisk, Cllrs Ojumiri, Yansaneh and Kabba, and FCC Ad

Seagulls put four past sluggish Spurs

Image
Tottenham’s Premier League revival was halted in emphatic fashion after two Joao Pedro penalties and a stunning strike from Pervis Estupinan helped injury-hit Brighton record a thumping 4-2 win. Spurs arrived at the Amex Stadium seeking a fourth successive top-flight success to reclaim fourth spot from reigning champions Manchester City. But the north London club were ripped apart as Pedro’s double and Estupinan’s thunderbolt added to Jack Hinshelwood’s opener. Tottenham, who claimed late consolations through substitute Alejo Veliz and Ben Davies, could easily have lost by more as rampant Albion twice hit the woodwork and had a Facundo Buonanotte effort disallowed. Richarlison struck a post for the visitors and was twice denied by the offside flag, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg also hit the woodwork. Yet, on this evidence, Champions League qualification looks a distant dream for Ange Postecoglou’s side, who had registered just one point from 15 before their recent upturn in form. Victo

Gunners' title hope hit the rock again

West Ham United’s Angelo Ogbonna gestures to the fans after the Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium, in London. Picture date: Thursday, December 28, 2023. Arsenal missed the chance to return to the top of the Premier League as they slipped to a disappointing defeat to West Ham amid more VAR controversy. The Gunners needed victory to replace Liverpool at the summit but lost 2-0 on a night when Hammers boss David Moyes finally landed a victory at the Emirates Stadium. West Ham lost Kurt Zouma ahead of the game and Lucas Paqueta after just over half an hour but hit the front through Tomas Soucek’s strike, awarded after VAR could not determine whether the whole ball had gone out of play in the build-up. A second-half header from former Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos secured the points and things could have been even better for the visitors had Said Benrahma not seen a last-gasp penalty saved by David Raya.

I spoke about the C40 Cities #Women4Climate mentorship programme which has been implemented in 22 cities, including Freetown and has impacted approximately 1000 women across those cities. I also described C40 Cities “Cities Hub and Network for Gender Equality” (#CHANGE) through which City Councils consciously ensure that women are prioritized in their employment, project and service delivery policies and practices. This has been effective in Freetown where our Urban Farming, Market Shade Covers, Market Health Screening and other projects specifically support vulnerable women. Closing remarks for the panel we

H.E. President Bio's administration is deeply committed to protecting human health and the environment for all Sierra Leoneans. I believe this strategy will serve as the foundation to achieve the government's priorities for the environment and climate change, and the vitally important mission of the Agency. Brentford 1:4 Wolves: Hwang brace helps visitors to thumping win.

Image
Hee-chan Hwang scored twice as Wolves earned a dominant 4-1 against a hapless Brentford. Hwang took his tally for the season to 11 as Wanderers followed up their Christmas Eve win over Chelsea by collecting another festive three points. It was a first victory in the capital in 15 attempts for Wolves, their last coming in a 2-0 win at Tottenham in February last year. But it was gifted to them by a Brentford side who could soon be looking nervously over their shoulders at the relegation battle after a fourth straight defeat and a sixth in seven matches. The Bees are riddled with injuries and suspensions – they had 10 players unavailable here — but there was still no excuse for some alarming defensive errors. Nathan Collins arguably had his best game for Wolves; unfortunately the centre-half left Molineux to join Brentford in June. The Bees’ record signing endured a nightmare against his former club, handing them two goals with terrible passes on an evening to forget. Wolves were inches

It was only City’s second win in seven league matches, but was enough to bring second-placed Arsenal within their sights and Liverpool not much further away. However, the loss of John Stones, making only his fifth Premier League start this season due to injury, and an eighth successive Premier League game without a clean sheet were less welcome. With Liverpool and Arsenal drawing just before  Christmas, City returned victorious from Saudi Arabia knowing winning their two games in hand would leave them just a couple of points behind Jurgen Klopp’s side at the summit. Had it not been for some wayward shooting and, more significantly, Jordan Pickford, they would probably have been coasting towards the first of those wins before half-time. The England number one’s most important intervention came in the 14th minute when he saved Matheus Nunes’ shot and then stuck out a foot to narrowly divert wide Alvarez’s rebound. He also later denied Jack Grealish. And without Erling Haaland for a six

Driving over halfway, his pass forward was wayward, but interest in Chelsea’s attack was revived by a critical slip by Nathaniel Clyne whose stumble let the ball run on. That allowed it to reach Christopher Nkunku, who fed the galloping Malo Gusto on the overlap and his centre was gratefully turned home first time by Mudryk. The Ukraine international had made an electric start and would have made it two shortly afterwards but for a smothering block by Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, closing the angle well after Mudryk had been slipped in by a deft Jackson back heel. There was a fluency about Chelsea that has rarely been seen in recent weeks. Nkunku on his long-awai

Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League table after a 2:0 win over Burnley.

Liverpool moved top of the Premier League with a tricky 2-0 victory over Burnley on Tuesday evening. Darwin Nunez struck from range in an overwhelmingly dominant first half which also saw a Cody Gakpo goal ruled out for a foul. Harvey Elliott later saw an effort chalked off for offside after the break. Burnley threatened to get back into the game in the second half but Diogo Jota's 50th Liverpool goal late on ultimately put the hosts to bed. How the game unfolded Burnley made a red-hot start but the first real opportunity of the game fell to Liverpool. Harvey Elliott's strike from range forced James Trafford into a smart save inside four minutes, before Mohamed Salah was caught offside from the rebound. Liverpool wouldn't have to wait long for their opener. With six minutes on the clock, Nunez pulled the trigger from outside the box and carefully guided the ball into Trafford's bottom corner. The Burnley stopper pulled out an excellent save to deny an immediate second f

Wood, the man for whom the Magpies’ new owners paid Burnley £25million in January last year in a bid to stave off relegation, took advantage of woeful defending to plunder a treble which ended his former club’s seven-game winning league run at St James’ Park and condemned them to a sixth defeat in seven games in all competitions. A 3-1 victory was little more than the visitors deserved on a day when Eddie Howe’s men, who took the lead through a contentious Alexander Isak penalty, were ripped apart by Anthony Elanga and Morgan Gibbs-White in front of a disbelieving crowd of 52,207.
